Peace now! (3917 bytes)

Today left Cork and headed south to the seaside village of Cove (Cobh). Millions of Irish men, women and children left Ireland for the USA, Canada, Australia and South America from here.  Rebels from the 1798 uprisings were sent on prison ships to Australia and hundreds of thousands left in "coffin ships".  (called coffin ships because they were not sea worthy and generally sank en-route)  Cove was also a major port-of-call for most of the large passenger liners during the hay day of passenger ships.

We left Cove and headed for Killarney.  We drove narrow farm roads through the Boggeragh Mountains.  Beautiful country.  We choose this direction because of the "magic wells and circles of stones" that dot the mountains.   We spent the night outside of Killarney and left early, heading for Castle Bunratty and the Cliffs of Moher. More on that tomorrow.
