Peace now! (3917 bytes)

July 16 / July 17

The ninth and tenth nights we spent at Marton Manor.  This was one of the places we ended up more by going where the wind blew us than for any other reason.  We met Marie and Tony our hosts here.   Spent two nights.  We are on the border of the Republic and Ulster (Northern Ireland).  The information Kathy brought with us pointed to Strabane for her family roots.  So we spent a  day in "The North".  We had to change Irish Pounds to Pounds Sterling here.  Irish Money is, how should I say, looked down on, here.  We spent most of the morning in the local library researching the McDermott and Nannery families.  McDermott is as common as Smith here.  Looking through the phone books for the entire country (there are only 9) and at passenger manifests for emigrants we learned a little but nothing earth shaking.  I found that there are only 23 Nannery families in the entire country.

A nice country home near Lifford / Strabane in the North of Ireland.    Tony and Marie were most charming hosts and Marie went more than the extra mile to make us feel comfortable and to ease our way into Northern Ireland.
